dated 31st January 1883. Very readable
with
much local interest from over 100 years ago. £50 mortgage between
Lavinia Anne Goldstraw Spinster of Wetley Rocks and William Henry
Bullock
Cattle Dealer and William Challinor of Leek. Interest at £5
percentum
per annum. refers also to James Goldstraw Stonemason and James
Goldstraw
the younger InnKeeper. Witnessed by W Newall of Leek.

ASSIGNMENT of a share in the proceeds of sale of certain
property
situate
at Wetley Rocks and Cellar Head in the County of Stafford by way of
mortgage
for securing £50 and interest.
Dated 23rd July 1886
Further charge for £60 and interest
I hereby acknowledge that all principle and interest
moneys secured
by the within written deeds of the 31st January 1883 and the 23rd day
of
July 1886 [here is an initialled addition "Wm C £121- 10- 00 "]
have
been repaid. Dated this 28th day of March 1888. [here is added the

THIS INDENTURE of mortgage made the thirty first day of
January One
thousand eight hundred and eighty three Between Lavinia Anne
Goldstraw
of Wetley Rocks in the County of Stafford Spinster (hereinafter
referred
to as the mortgagor) of the first part and William Henry Bullock
of Wetley Rocks aforesaid Cattle dealer of the second part and William
Challinor of Leek in the same County Gentleman (hereinafter
referred
to as the Mortgagee) of the third part Witnesseth that in
consideration
of the sum of fifty pounds paid to the mortgagor by the Mortgagee of
which
sum the Mortgagor hereby acknowledges the receipt the Mortgagor and the
said William Henry Bullock hereby jointly and severely covenant with
the
Mortgagee to pay to him on the thirty first day of July next the sum of
fifty pounds with interest thereon in the meantime at the rate of Five
pounds percentum per annum and also as long after that day as any
principle
money remains due under this mortgage to pay to the mortgagee interest
thereon at the same rate by equal half yearly payments on the thirty
first
day of January and the thirty first day of July
And this Indenture also witnesseth that for the same
consideration
the Mortgagor as beneficial owner hereby grants and assigns unto the
Mortgagee All
that the said Lavinia Anne Goldstraw's one fourth or other her share
and
interest as one of the children of James Goldstraw the younger late of
Wetley Rocks aforesaid Innkeeper deceased under the Will dated the
fifth
day of September One thousand eight hundred and fourty nine of her
grandfather
James Goldstraw late of Wetley Rocks aforesaid stone mason deceased in
the proceeds of sale of certain property devised thereby to Trustees
upon
trust for her father the said James Goldstraw the younger for his life
and then upon trust for sale and division surplus purchase money among
his children as in the said Will mentioned And all other her
share
estate and interest under such Will To hold the same unto the
Mortgagee
his executors administrators and assigns subject to the proviso for
redemption
following (namely) that if the Mortgagor or any person claiming under
her
shall on the thirty first day of July next pay to the Mortgagee the sum
of Fifty pounds and interest thereon at the rate aforesaid then the
Mortgagee
or the persons claiming under him will at the request and cost of the
Mortgagor
or the person claiming under her reconvey or reassign the premises to
the
Mortgagor or the person claiming under her. In witness whereof
the
said parties to these presents have hereby set their hands and seals
the
day and year first before written. -

This Indenture made the twenty third day of July
One thousand
eight hundred and eighty six Between the within named Lavinia
Anne Goldstraw now the wife of Arthur James Grosvenor of Heath
House
in the Parish of Cheddleton in the County of Stafford nurseryman of the
one part and the within named William Challinor of the other
part Witnesseth
that in consideration of the further sum of Sixty pounds this day paid
to the said Lavinia Anne Grosvenor by the said william Challinor The
said Lavinia Anne Grosvenor doth hereby covenant with the said
William
Challinor to pay to him on the thirty first day of January next the
said
further sum of Sixty pounds with interest for the same in the mean time
at the rate of Five pounds per centum per annum and if the said sum or
any part thereof shall remain unpaid after the said thirty first day of
January next will thereafter pay to him interest for so much thereof as
shall for the time being remain unpaid at the rate of Five pounds per
centum
per annum by equal half yearly payments on the thirty first day of
January
and the thirty first day of July And further that All
the
share estate hereditaments and premises comprised in and expressed to
be
granted and assigned by the within written Indenture shall be charged
with
the payment and shall not be redeemable but upon payment by the said
Lavinia
Ann Grosvenor her heirs executors administrators of assigns to the said
William Challinor his executors administrators or assigns of as well
the
said sum of Sixty pounds and interest for the same according to the
covenant
hereinbefore contained in that behalf as the within mentioned sum of
Fifty
pounds and the interest due and to become due for the same In
witness
whereof the said parties to these presents have hereunto set their
hands
and seals the day and year first before written.

[Curiously although there are two seals attached, only Lavinia
appears
to have signed this indenture. I can see no evidence of William
Challinor
having signed it, nor is it witnessed by the solicitor who witnessed
the
first indenture, W. Newall . Both indentures must have been effective
however
as William Challinor has signed a release on the cover for both
mortgages.]
